Possible impacts of order editing

Order editing can have an impact on your store's apps and processes. In this article, we will outline some possible impacts you should keep in mind before editing orders.

In this article

A. Discounts
B. Order total
C. Analytics
D. Cancel and refund
E. Export
F. Fulfillment services
G. Orders with personalized items

A. Discounts

Discounts will be recalculated according to the changes in line items and order subtotal.

Example: An order is applied with a 10% discount on the order subtotal. When you edit this order, if the order total increases from $100 to $120, the discount will increase from $10 to $12.

If the merchant applies a discount to some of the products in the order but then removes that product when editing the order, the discount will be waived as well. This also occurs when setting discounts for minimum purchase amount and minimum item quantity.

If a discount from Boost Upsell app is applied to an order, the discount will not be recalculated when editing the order.

B. Order total

When editing an order, the order total will be recalculated using the following formula:

Order total = Order subtotal - Discount (if any) + Shipping fee - Tax (if any) + Tip (if any).

Order subtotal = Original order subtotal (before the edit) - [Price x Quantity (of the original items)] + [Price x Quantity (of the new items)].
Discount: Discounts will be calculated as specified in section A.
Shipping fee: Unchanged.
Tax: Tax will be recalculated according to the tax rate set up for the new items.
Tip: Unchanged.

C. Analytics

When orders are edited, the following analytics metrics will be affected:

Total sales.
Average order value
Average order items
Reports by Total sales, Product, Variant option, Sales over time, Variant SKU, Order, Product type.

If an order is edited and the order total remains unchanged, the statistics and charts in the analytics and sales reports are automatically updated to reflect the order.

If an order is edited and the order total increases, the statistics and charts in the analytics and sales reports are automatically updated to reflect the order after the customer successfully paid for the amount to collect.

If an order is edited and the the order total decreases, the statistics and charts in the analytics and sales reports are automatically updated to reflect the order.

D. Cancel and refund

When an order is edited and the order total increases:

If the customer has not paid the amount to collect: The order status will be changed to Pending. You cannot cancel and refund this order.
If the customer has paid the amount to collect: You can cancel and refund this order as normal if needed.

E. Export

When an order is edited and the order total increases:

If the customer has not paid the amount to collect: When you export this order, the order details in the csv file will be the same as it was before the edit.
If the customer has paid the amount to collect: When you export this order, the order details will be updated according to the new edit. If you export the transaction histories of this order, the csv file will have two transactions for this order.

G. Orders with personalized items

At the moment, if a personalized item in an order is edited, the selected personalization elements of the customer will not be saved. You will need to separately save this data before editing the order to ensure accurate and complete information for order fulfillment. However, if you only edit the non-personalized item in an order, the personalization elements in the personalized item that is not edit remains the same.
